Overview

16-channel 5V relay module for independently controlling up to 16 electrical loads with NO/NC/COM outputs and LED status indicators.

Description

The 16 Channel 5V Relay Module is a multi-channel electromechanical switching board designed to allow microcontrollers and digital control systems to operate multiple electrical loads independently. With 16 separate relay channels, the module can control up to 16 devices or circuits from a single interface, making it useful for automation systems, embedded projects, PLC expansion, robotics, and smart-home applications.

Each relay provides NO (Normally Open), NC (Normally Closed), and COM (Common) contacts, allowing flexible connection depending on whether the connected load should be normally ON or OFF. The relay contacts are electrically separated from the control logic, allowing the module to switch loads that operate at higher voltages than the microcontroller itself. Typical versions of this module are rated up to 250V AC / 10A or 30V DC / 10A per relay, although the appropriate rating depends on the load type and relay specification. ๎ˆ

The control side operates from 5V DC and provides individual digital inputs from IN1 to IN16. This allows each relay to be switched independently using a microcontroller such as Arduino, AVR, PIC, ARM-based boards, or other compatible digital control systems. Many versions use an active-low trigger, where pulling the corresponding input LOW activates the relay.

For additional protection between the control electronics and relay-driving circuitry, common versions incorporate optocoupler isolation. This helps reduce the effect of electrical noise and switching transients on the microcontroller side. Each channel also includes an LED indicator, providing a quick visual indication of the relay's activation state during testing, troubleshooting, or normal operation.

The module is particularly useful when a project requires several independent outputs but the controller does not have sufficient relay outputs available. Instead of using 16 individual relay modules, a single board provides centralized control and wiring for all 16 channels. It can be used for switching lighting circuits, fans, pumps, solenoid valves, small motors, electrical appliances, and other compatible loads.

When switching mains voltage or inductive loads such as motors and pumps, the relay's maximum rating should not be treated as a universal continuous-load rating. Proper wiring, protection, load derating, and electrical isolation are essential for safe operation.
